Free or paid SSL?

Free vs Paid SSL Certificates: Let’s Encrypt, Hosting SSL and When to Pay

Free SSL certificates encrypt your site just as well as paid ones. You pay for identity validation, warranty, support and less dependency on automation – this guide shows when that is worth it.

Free vs paid SSL certificates, in short: both give you the same encryption and the same browser padlock. Free certificates, such as those from Let’s Encrypt or your host, are domain-validated (DV) only and come without warranty or personal support. Paid certificates add organization or extended validation, longer subscription terms, a warranty, a site seal and help when something breaks.

For a personal site or blog, free SSL is usually enough. For a business that needs a verified company name, predictable renewals or someone to call, a paid certificate is the safer choice.

Free vs paid SSL: what do I actually get for the money?

You get identity, support and accountability – not stronger encryption. The table below compares a typical free certificate with typical paid DV, OV and EV certificates.

FeatureFree (Let’s Encrypt / host)Paid DVPaid OV / EV
ValidationDomain control onlyDomain control onlyDomain plus verified organization
WarrantyNoneIncluded (amount varies by product)Larger warranty (varies by product)

Paid plans at BUY-SSL are subscriptions: a “1/2/3-year” plan includes free reissues during the term, and each issued certificate follows the current maximum lifetime. For the reasons prices differ between paid products, see how much an SSL certificate costs.

Is Let’s Encrypt good enough for a business website?

Yes, for encryption. Let’s Encrypt is a publicly trusted, nonprofit certificate authority (CA, an organization browsers trust to issue certificates) run by the Internet Security Research Group (ISRG), and browsers treat its certificates like any other DV certificate.

The limits are about everything around the encryption:

  • DV only: no OV or EV, so your company name never appears in the certificate.
  • No warranty: there is no financial backing for your visitors.
  • Automation dependency: certificates expire every 90 days, so renewal must run automatically through an ACME client (software that requests and renews certificates).
  • No direct support: help comes from community forums or your host.

Let’s Encrypt also stopped sending expiration reminder emails in 2025. If your renewal job fails silently, you learn about it when visitors see a browser warning.

Does Let’s Encrypt provide free SSL certificates?

Yes. Let’s Encrypt issues free DV certificates, including wildcards, to anyone who can prove control of a domain. As of October 2026, its default lifetime is 90 days. In late 2025 Let’s Encrypt announced it will shorten lifetimes in stages to 45 days by 2028, so plan for even more frequent renewals.

Let’s Encrypt vs paid SSL certificates in 2026

Good fit for Let’s EncryptPick a paid certificate if
Your host or server renews certificates automaticallyYour platform cannot run ACME automation reliably
You need encryption and a padlock onlyYou want your company name verified (OV or EV)
You have technical staff to monitor renewalsYou want vendor support when installation or renewal fails
Personal sites, blogs, test and staging systemsContracts, tenders or partners require a paid or OV/EV certificate
You are comfortable without a warrantyYou want a warranty and a CA site seal

Free SSL certificate providers

A free SSL certificate comes from a CA that funds issuance through sponsors, upsells or bundled services. As of October 2026, these are the main sources:

  • Let’s Encrypt: the largest free CA; ACME-only, 90-day DV certificates.
  • ZeroSSL: free 90-day DV certificates via ACME and a web interface, with paid tiers; check current limits on their site.
  • Google Trust Services: offers free DV certificates through ACME; check current terms on their site.
  • Your web host: many hosts issue free certificates automatically, often through cPanel AutoSSL or Let’s Encrypt.
  • Cloudflare Universal SSL: free, but it secures only the connection between visitors and Cloudflare (see below).

Buypass, a Norwegian CA, used to offer free Go SSL certificates via ACME but stopped issuing TLS certificates in October 2025. Older tutorials that recommend “Buypass Go SSL ACME free” no longer work.

What is the best free SSL certificate?

The best free SSL certificate is the one your host or server can renew automatically without your involvement. For most sites that means Let’s Encrypt, either built into the hosting panel or through an ACME client such as Certbot. Pick the free option with the most reliable automation, not the one with the nicest website.

Are free SSL certificates safe?

Yes. Free certificates from publicly trusted CAs use the same algorithms and key sizes as paid ones. The risk lies in setup: a key generated on an untrusted website, or a renewal that silently fails. For encryption strength, limits and fake-certificate risks, read how secure SSL is.

How to get a free SSL certificate in 4 steps

  1. Check your host first

Look in your hosting panel for "SSL," "AutoSSL" or "Let's Encrypt." Many hosts issue a free certificate with one click.

  2. Otherwise install an ACME client

On your own server, install a client such as Certbot or acme.sh, which generates the key on your server.

  3. Prove domain control

The client completes an HTTP file or DNS TXT challenge. Wildcards require the DNS method.

  4. Automate and monitor renewal

Schedule automatic renewal and add expiry monitoring, because free certificates expire every 90 days.

My host includes free SSL – do I still need to buy one?

Usually not, if you only need encryption and your host renews the certificate automatically. You should buy one if you need OV or EV validation, a warranty, a certificate you can move between hosts, or coverage your host’s free SSL does not include.

Host-included SSL is tied to that host. If you move your site, the certificate stays behind, and some hosts only cover the main domain and “www” rather than every subdomain. Some hosts also charge a fee to install a third-party certificate; check current terms on their site.

What to look for in web hosting with an SSL certificate

We do not rank hosts, but the best web hosting with free SSL certificates shares these traits:

  • Automatic issuance and renewal with no manual steps.
  • Coverage for all subdomains you use, including wildcards if needed.
  • The option to upload your own paid certificate later.
  • Expiry alerts sent to you, not just to the host.
  • Automatic HTTP-to-HTTPS redirects.

Does Cloudflare’s free SSL mean I don’t need a certificate on my server?

No. Cloudflare’s free Universal SSL encrypts the connection between visitors and Cloudflare’s edge network. The connection between Cloudflare and your server (the origin) needs its own valid certificate if you want end-to-end encryption.

Cloudflare SSL modeVisitor → CloudflareCloudflare → your serverCertificate on server
FlexibleEncryptedNot encryptedNone
FullEncryptedEncrypted, certificate not validatedAny, even self-signed
Full (strict)EncryptedEncrypted and validatedPublicly trusted certificate or Cloudflare Origin CA certificate

Use Full (strict). Cloudflare’s free Origin CA certificate works for this, but only Cloudflare trusts it, so it fails if you ever bypass or leave Cloudflare. A publicly trusted certificate on the origin works with or without Cloudflare.

Tip: “Flexible” mode shows a padlock to visitors while traffic to your server travels unencrypted. Never use it for logins, checkouts or any personal data.

Which SSL works for a Shopify or Wix store?

Use the SSL the platform provides. Shopify and Wix issue and renew free certificates automatically for connected domains, and on most plans you cannot install your own certificate.

That means you do not need to buy a certificate for a store hosted entirely on these platforms. You may still need one for anything you run outside the platform, such as a custom subdomain on your own server, a mail server or an API endpoint.

Are there SSL certificates with a free trial?

Some certificate authorities have offered short trial certificates in the past, but availability changes, and many trial certificates are not suitable for production sites. Whether a trial product is available through BUY-SSL depends on our suppliers at the time; check the product pages or contact support.

In practice, a free Let’s Encrypt certificate is the simplest way to test HTTPS before you buy.

Free SSL certificate generators: what to watch for

A “free SSL certificate generator” is usually a website that runs the ACME process for you in the browser. These can work, but they often leave renewal to you every 90 days, and some ask you to paste or download your private key, which should never leave your server.

If you want a certificate only for internal testing, you can create one yourself, but browsers will not trust it; that topic belongs to self-signed certificates.

Can I get unlimited free SSL certificates?

Practically yes, but with rate limits. Let’s Encrypt caps how many certificates you can request per registered domain per week, which matters for hosts and SaaS platforms with many customer domains. Paid multi-domain or wildcard certificates can reduce the number of certificates you need to manage.

Can I get free SSL certificates for 1 year?

No. Free certificates from Let’s Encrypt and similar CAs last 90 days, and as of 15 March 2026 no public certificate can exceed 200 days. Our guide on how long SSL certificates last explains the lifetime rules and the upcoming steps to 47 days.

Are SSL certificates free? When to pay instead

SSL certificates can be free, but a paid certificate makes sense in these situations:

  1. You need your organization verified in the certificate (OV or EV).
  2. Your platform, appliance or legacy server cannot run ACME automation.
  3. You want vendor support for CSR, installation and reissue problems.
  4. A partner, tender, insurer or compliance auditor expects a paid or OV/EV certificate.
  5. You want a warranty and a site seal on checkout or login pages.
  6. You run many hosts and prefer one multi-domain or wildcard certificate to dozens of free ones.

If none of these apply, free SSL is a reasonable choice. If one does, the cheapest paid option is usually a domain validated (DV) SSL certificate, which matches free SSL on validation but adds support, warranty and a subscription term.

Low-priced paid DV certificates

Free SSL certificates setup vs paid: the effort compared

Free SSL costs no money but needs working automation. Paid SSL costs money but can be installed manually and reissued on your schedule within the plan term. As lifetimes shrink toward 47 days by 2029, automation will matter for paid certificates too, so the gap in effort is narrowing.

If you decide to pay, compare suppliers on price, brand range and support rather than on encryption. Frequently asked questions

Is Let's Encrypt good enough for a business website?

Yes, for encryption. Let's Encrypt certificates are publicly trusted and use the same encryption as paid certificates. The limits are elsewhere: they are DV only (no OV or EV), carry no warranty, come without direct support and expire every 90 days, so renewal must be automated. Choose a paid certificate if you need a verified company name, vendor support or a platform without ACME automation.

Free vs paid SSL: what do I actually get for the money?

You get identity, support and accountability rather than stronger encryption. Paid certificates offer OV and EV validation, a warranty for relying parties, CA site seals, vendor support and a multi-year subscription with free reissues. Free certificates offer DV validation and 90-day lifetimes with no warranty. Both show the same padlock and use the same algorithms and key sizes.

My host includes free SSL — do I still need to buy one?

Usually not, if your host renews the certificate automatically and you only need encryption. Buy one if you need OV or EV validation, a warranty, coverage for subdomains your host does not include, or a certificate you can move between hosts. Host-included certificates stay with the host, so check what happens to HTTPS before you migrate your site.

Does Cloudflare's free SSL mean I don't need a certificate on my server?

No. Cloudflare's free Universal SSL secures only the connection between visitors and Cloudflare. For end-to-end encryption, use Cloudflare's Full (strict) mode, which requires a valid certificate on your origin server. A free Cloudflare Origin CA certificate works for that but is trusted only by Cloudflare; a publicly trusted certificate also works if you ever stop using Cloudflare.

Which SSL works for a Shopify or Wix store?

Use the SSL the platform provides. Shopify and Wix issue and renew free certificates automatically for connected domains, and on most plans you cannot install your own certificate. You do not need to buy one for a store hosted entirely on these platforms. You may still need a certificate for services you run elsewhere, such as a custom subdomain, mail server or API.

How do I get a free SSL certificate?

First check your hosting panel for a free SSL or AutoSSL option, which many hosts enable with one click. On your own server, install an ACME client such as Certbot, prove domain control with an HTTP file or DNS record, and schedule automatic renewal. Free certificates expire every 90 days, so add expiry monitoring in case renewal fails.
