GeoTrust vs Thawte vs RapidSSL is not a choice between competing companies: all three brands have belonged to DigiCert since 2017 and are validated and issued by DigiCert. The difference is the product range. RapidSSL sells domain-validated (DV) certificates only, while GeoTrust and Thawte also offer organization-validated (OV) and extended-validation (EV) certificates.

Browse DigiCert certificatesAre GeoTrust, Thawte and RapidSSL the same company?
Yes. DigiCert acquired Symantec’s website security business in 2017, which included GeoTrust, Thawte and RapidSSL, and has run all three brands since. The same DigiCert validation teams and systems handle orders for every brand.
That means the brand name does not change how well a certificate encrypts or how widely browsers trust it. Encryption strength is the same for DV, OV and EV, and it is set by your key and server settings. Old certificates issued under Symantec’s former infrastructure are a separate story, covered in Symantec SSL certificates today.
Because one CA stands behind all three brands, many things work the same way whichever you choose:
- Validation rules: DV, OV and EV checks follow the same CA/Browser Forum requirements.
- Certificate lifetime: as of October 2026, each public TLS certificate is valid for at most 200 days, falling to 100 days from 15 March 2027.
- Installation: you generate a CSR (certificate signing request), validate, and install the certificate with the intermediate bundle in the same way.
- Reissues: during your plan term you can reissue, for example after a server move or a lost private key.
Which is the cheapest DigiCert brand?
RapidSSL is DigiCert’s entry-level brand and usually has the lowest-priced certificates in its family. GeoTrust QuickSSL Premium and Thawte SSL123 are the DV alternatives from the sister brands. Compare the live prices below; they update automatically.
Entry-level DV from each brand
Best value RapidSSL
RapidSSL Certificate

- DigiCert-backed brand
from $13.33 / year
Popular choice GeoTrust
GeoTrust QuickSSL Premium

Fast issuance Thawte
Thawte SSL123

The price gap among the three DV products reflects the product line, not the encryption. Check what each includes beyond the certificate itself, such as a site seal, wildcard or multi-domain options, and the number of reissues, before you decide. Browse all RapidSSL certificates if price is your main criterion.
Which brands offer OV and EV?
GeoTrust and Thawte both sell OV and EV certificates; RapidSSL does not. If you need your company name inside the certificate, choose GeoTrust True BusinessID or Thawte SSL Web Server, or one of their EV versions.
- GeoTrust OV: True BusinessID, plus Wildcard, Multi-Domain and Multi-Domain Wildcard versions
- GeoTrust EV: True BusinessID with EV, EV Multi-Domain and EV (Flex)
- Thawte OV: SSL Web Server, plus Wildcard and Multi-Domain Wildcard versions
- Thawte EV: SSL Web Server with EV and SSL Web Server EV (Flex)
OV and EV orders take longer than DV because DigiCert checks your organization in public business registries and confirms it by phone, whichever of the two brands you pick. The steps are described in how SSL validation works; having your registry record and a listed phone number ready is the best way to avoid delays.
GeoTrust has the broadest range of the three, including OV multi-domain wildcard. See all GeoTrust SSL certificates or all Thawte SSL certificates for every term and option.

Is RapidSSL good enough for business sites?
Yes, if domain validation fits your needs. A RapidSSL certificate encrypts traffic just as strongly as an OV or EV certificate and shows the same padlock. It does not verify or display your company name, so choose GeoTrust or Thawte OV/EV when you need that.
| RapidSSL is a good fit | Pick GeoTrust or Thawte OV/EV if |
|---|---|
| Company sites, blogs and portfolios | You want your verified organization name in the certificate |
| Small online shops using a hosted payment page | A customer, bank or tender requires OV or EV |
| Staging, APIs and internal tools on public domains | You need multi-domain coverage in one certificate |
| Sites that need a certificate quickly, with no paperwork | You want a higher warranty tier or more support options |
Many business sites run perfectly well on DV. Visitors look for the padlock and a working HTTPS connection; very few open the certificate details. Since 2019, browsers no longer show a green EV address bar, so EV information is only visible in the certificate viewer. The case for OV or EV today is mainly about verified identity for partners, auditors and procurement, not about what most visitors see.
For the difference between validation levels in general, see DV vs OV vs EV SSL.
Which brand fits you
RapidSSL
DV only, single domain or wildcard. The entry-level choice when you just need encryption.
GeoTrust
The broadest range: DV, OV and EV, including multi-domain and OV multi-domain wildcard.
Thawte
DV, OV and EV in a compact range, with OV wildcard and EV multi-domain options.
How to decide in three questions
- Do you need your company name verified? No: RapidSSL or a GeoTrust/Thawte DV product. Yes: GeoTrust or Thawte OV or EV.
- How many names do you need to cover? One hostname or one subdomain level: any brand. Several different domains: GeoTrust or Thawte multi-domain.
- Do you want automated renewal? Look at the GeoTrust and RapidSSL “Plan + Automate” products, which work with ACME clients.
Also think about the plan term. A one-, two- or three-year plan at BUY-SSL is a subscription during which you can reissue certificates, while each individual certificate still follows the maximum lifetime above. Shorter lifetimes mean more frequent replacement, so an automated option saves the most time on sites you cannot easily reach by hand. For a handful of sites, a manual DV certificate from any of the three brands remains a simple and reliable choice. How plan terms work is explained in our guide to multi-year SSL certificates.
If none of the three fits, the DigiCert brand itself offers OV and EV products with additional platform features. You can compare every option under DigiCert SSL certificates.
