How to Install a Third-Party SSL Certificate on GoDaddy Hosting

You do not have to buy your certificate from GoDaddy to use it on GoDaddy hosting. This guide shows which plans accept a third-party SSL certificate, how to install it in cPanel or Plesk and how to renew without downtime.

To install an SSL certificate on GoDaddy hosting that you bought elsewhere, you need a plan that lets you manage certificates yourself, such as Web Hosting (cPanel) or Windows Hosting (Plesk). You create a certificate signing request (CSR) in the control panel, order and validate the certificate, then paste the certificate and its CA bundle back into the panel. Managed WordPress and website-builder plans do not accept third-party certificates.

Can I use an SSL certificate from another provider on GoDaddy hosting?

Yes, on most self-managed GoDaddy plans, but not on fully managed website products. GoDaddy’s own help center lists which products support third-party certificates, and “support” there means you can install the certificate yourself; GoDaddy does not do it for you.

How to install an SSL certificate on GoDaddy cPanel hosting

  1. Create the CSR in cPanel

In your GoDaddy account open the hosting plan, choose cPanel Admin, then SSL/TLS › Certificate Signing Requests. Enter your domain and company details. cPanel stores the private key for you.

  2. Order and validate

Paste the CSR into your certificate order and complete domain validation by email, DNS record or file upload. Download the certificate and the CA bundle when it is issued.

  3. Install the certificate

In cPanel go to SSL/TLS › Manage SSL Sites. Select the domain, paste the certificate into the CRT field and choose "Autofill by Certificate" so cPanel finds the matching key. Paste the CA bundle and select Install Certificate.

  4. Test and redirect

Check the site over HTTPS, confirm the new expiry date, then make sure HTTP redirects to HTTPS.

Overview

If you prefer to create the key outside cPanel, use our CSR generator and keep the private key file; you will paste it into the Private Key field in step 3. The CA bundle field matters more than it looks. Leave it empty and many desktop browsers still connect, but some phones and API clients fail because the certificate chain is incomplete.

Addon domains and subdomains

Each addon domain or subdomain on a cPanel plan is a separate entry in Manage SSL Sites, and GoDaddy notes that certificates for them are installed manually. Pick the exact domain from the list before you paste the certificate. If you run several subdomains, one wildcard certificate can cover all of them at one level, and you install the same certificate on each entry.

Windows Hosting (Plesk) and IIS

On a Plesk plan, open Websites & Domains, choose SSL/TLS Certificates for the domain, create the CSR there, then upload or paste the issued certificate and CA certificate. On a GoDaddy VPS or dedicated server running IIS, create the request in IIS Manager under Server Certificates, complete it with the issued certificate, then bind it to the site on port 443.

GoDaddy SSL certificate renewal without buying from GoDaddy

Order the new certificate from another provider a few weeks before your current one expires, install it alongside the old one, verify it, then let the GoDaddy certificate run out. Your site never goes without a valid certificate.

  1. Note the expiry date of your current certificate.
  2. Order the replacement and complete validation ahead of that date.
  3. Install it with the cPanel or Plesk steps above.
  4. Check the live site to confirm the new certificate is served.
  5. Turn off auto-renewal for the old certificate in your GoDaddy account if you do not want it renewed.

Our SSL checker shows the issuer and expiry date of the certificate your server actually delivers, which is the quickest way to confirm the switch worked.

Tip: Certificate lifetimes are getting shorter. As of October 2026 a public certificate can be valid for at most 200 days, falling to 100 days from 15 March 2027, so you will repeat the install step more often. Keep your CSR details and a short checklist with your hosting notes.

What happens to my GoDaddy SSL when I switch?

Nothing breaks, and you do not need to cancel anything first. The old GoDaddy certificate stays valid until its expiry date; your server simply stops presenting it once the new certificate is installed for the same domain. Because cPanel swaps the certificate in one step, visitors see no downtime.

For most small sites a domain validated (DV) SSL certificate is the direct replacement for GoDaddy’s standard SSL. It is issued after a quick domain check and works on every supported GoDaddy hosting plan.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Can I use an SSL certificate from another provider on GoDaddy hosting?

A: It depends on your plan. GoDaddy supports third-party certificates on Web Hosting (cPanel), Windows Hosting (Plesk), VPS and dedicated servers, where you install them yourself. Managed Hosting for WordPress, Websites + Marketing and Online Store plans do not accept third-party certificates. GoDaddy updates its plans from time to time, so confirm your current plan in the GoDaddy help center before ordering.

Q: How do I install an SSL certificate on GoDaddy cPanel hosting?

A: Create a certificate signing request in cPanel under SSL/TLS, use it to order and validate your certificate, then download the certificate and CA bundle. In cPanel open Manage SSL Sites, paste the certificate, use Autofill by Certificate to load the private key, paste the CA bundle and install. Finally, test the site over HTTPS and confirm the new expiry date with an SSL checker.

Q: What happens to my GoDaddy SSL when I switch?

A: Your GoDaddy certificate stays valid until its expiry date, so you can install the new certificate first and let the old one expire on its own. Once the new certificate is installed for the same domain, your server presents it instead, and visitors see no downtime. Turn off auto-renewal for the old certificate in your GoDaddy account if you do not want to renew it.

Q: How do I renew SSL on GoDaddy without buying from GoDaddy?

A: Order a replacement certificate from another provider a few weeks before your GoDaddy certificate expires. Complete validation, install the new certificate and CA bundle in cPanel or Plesk, then verify that your site serves it. After that, let the GoDaddy certificate expire and switch off its auto-renewal. This way the site is never without a valid certificate during the change.
