DigiCert vs Sectigo: Which Certificate Authority Should You Choose?

DigiCert and Sectigo are the two certificate authorities behind every SSL product sold at BUY-SSL. Both are trusted by every major browser; they differ in tooling, validation workflow and price tier.

In the DigiCert vs Sectigo choice, neither certificate authority (CA, the company that verifies you and issues the certificate) gives you stronger encryption or wider browser trust. Both issue publicly trusted certificates that work in all major browsers. Pick DigiCert for its enterprise management platform and premium brand; pick Sectigo (formerly Comodo CA) for a lower price tier and the widest range of budget DV options.

Is DigiCert better than Sectigo?

Not in the way most buyers mean. Both CAs are trusted by the same browsers and operating systems, and a DigiCert certificate encrypts traffic exactly as well as a Sectigo certificate of the same type. The real differences are in validation workflow, management tooling and price tier.

Encryption strength depends on the key and the TLS settings on your server, not on the brand. A visitor cannot tell which CA you used unless they open the certificate details. What changes is the experience around the certificate: how you order, validate, reissue and track it, and how much support you get when something goes wrong.

  • Validation: both follow the same CA/Browser Forum rules; the workflow and portal differ.
  • Tooling: DigiCert CertCentral and Sectigo Certificate Manager both offer inventory, discovery and automation for larger estates.
  • Price tier: Sectigo-issued products, including the Comodo names, usually sit in the lower price bands; DigiCert-branded products sit at the top.

Side by side: OV and EV from both CAs

Why is DigiCert more expensive?

You pay for brand reputation, the CertCentral management platform, support and a higher warranty tier. The certificate itself does not encrypt better. Whether those extras are worth it depends on how many certificates you run and how much you rely on vendor support.

DigiCert positions its own brand as a premium product for enterprises, banks and large ecommerce sites. Many DigiCert-brand OV and EV products also carry larger warranties than budget DV lines, and its platform targets teams that manage large numbers of certificates. Sectigo competes more on price and volume, especially through the PositiveSSL and EssentialSSL lines. Warranty amounts differ by product; check each product page rather than assuming a figure.

Tip: If you like DigiCert’s infrastructure but want a lower price, look at its sub-brands. GeoTrust, Thawte and RapidSSL certificates are issued by DigiCert at lower price points.

Which is faster for OV/EV validation?

Neither CA is reliably faster, and we do not publish issuance times. OV and EV checks follow the same CA/Browser Forum Baseline Requirements and EV Guidelines at both, so speed depends mostly on how quickly your organization can be verified.

Each CA runs its own validation team and portal, so the order of steps and the way they contact you differ. Both can reuse a completed organization validation for later orders within the reuse period the industry rules allow. That makes your second and third order noticeably simpler than the first.

Delays usually come from mismatched data, not from the CA. A trading name that differs from the registered legal name, a new company without directory listings, or an approver who misses the verification call will slow down any order. If public records are incomplete, both CAs can accept supporting documents, such as a letter from an attorney or accountant, where the industry guidelines allow it.

What speeds up OV and EV validation at either CA

  1. Match your registry record

Use the exact legal name and address shown in your state or national business registry.

  2. Be listed in a public directory

A phone number listed in a trusted public directory lets the CA complete its verification call.

  3. Prepare domain control

Have access to the admin email, DNS or web server so the domain check finishes on the first try.

  4. Answer the callback

Make sure the person named in the order can take the verification call and approve the request.

Tooling and automation compared

Automation matters more every year, because certificates now need replacing far more often. As of October 2026, a public TLS certificate can be valid for at most 200 days. Under CA/Browser Forum ballot SC-081, that drops to 100 days from 15 March 2027 and to 47 days from 15 March 2029.

Both CAs support ACME, the open protocol that clients such as Certbot use to request and install certificates automatically. At BUY-SSL, the DigiCert side offers this through the GeoTrust and RapidSSL “Plan + Automate” products; the Sectigo side through Sectigo ACME Certificate-as-a-Service and its PositiveSSL variant. For a handful of sites, either works well. For a large estate with many teams, compare the management platforms directly: discovery, reporting, user roles and integrations matter more than the certificate itself. Our guide to ACME with paid SSL certificates shows the setup.

Which brand do the product lines belong to?

DigiCert owns the DigiCert, GeoTrust, Thawte and RapidSSL brands. Sectigo issues all Sectigo products and the Comodo-named lines such as PositiveSSL, EssentialSSL and InstantSSL. The table maps the product lines we sell to the CA that issues them.

Both CAs move to newer root certificates as older ones age out of browser trust. As of October 2026, Sectigo issues public TLS certificates from its single-purpose roots (Sectigo Public Server Authentication Root R46 and E46). Always install the intermediate bundle delivered with your order.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Is DigiCert better than Sectigo?

A: Not for encryption or browser trust. Both are publicly trusted certificate authorities, and a certificate of the same type encrypts equally well from either. The differences lie in the validation workflow, the management platform (DigiCert CertCentral versus Sectigo Certificate Manager) and the price tier. DigiCert targets enterprises with premium tooling and support, while Sectigo and its Comodo product lines compete on price.

Q: Why is DigiCert more expensive?

A: DigiCert prices its own brand as a premium product. You pay for brand reputation, the CertCentral platform, enterprise-grade support and a higher warranty tier on many products, not for stronger encryption. Exact warranty amounts differ by product. If you want DigiCert infrastructure at a lower price, its GeoTrust, Thawte and RapidSSL brands are issued by DigiCert at lower price points.

Q: Which is faster for OV/EV validation?

A: Neither is reliably faster, because both follow the same CA/Browser Forum rules for organization and extended validation. Speed depends mainly on your data: a business registry entry that matches the order, a phone number in a trusted public directory, quick domain control and a prompt answer to the verification call. Both CAs can reuse a completed organization validation for later orders within the allowed period.

Q: Which brand do the product lines belong to?

A: DigiCert owns DigiCert, GeoTrust, Thawte and RapidSSL, the brands it acquired with Symantec's website security business in 2017. Sectigo, renamed from Comodo CA in 2018, issues all Sectigo products and the Comodo-named lines such as PositiveSSL, EssentialSSL and InstantSSL. Product names can stay the same even when the issuing company changes, so check the issuing CA in the certificate details.
